Making an Impact, Together
At Phi Beta Kappa, knowledge inspires action. As members of the PBK Greater Detroit Association, we strive to uplift our local communities through purposeful giving, hands-on action, and collective effort.

Investing in Education: As an organization that values love of learning as the guide to life, PBK Greater Detroit is deeply committed to ensuring that learners at all levels have every chance to succeed.
-
ï‚· We have long collaborated with Wayne State University to fund scholarships for excelling undergraduates in the Irvin D. Reid Honors College (see our Scholarships page for more information).
-
ï‚· We have recently become contributors to Washtenaw Promise, a nonprofit that believes literacy is a gateway to opportunity, self-expression and lifelong learning. Through programs like Big Friends & Read with Kids, Imagination Library, and Act Me a Story, Washtenaw Promise helps to ensure that elementary students in underserved communities receive the support they need to keep the doors to learning open. Washtenaw Promise also helps educators gain new insights through its teacher training programs.

In May 2026, PBK Greater Detroit officers Janet Thornburg, Rebecca Kraus, and Mary Stone met with Tim Wilson, Executor Director of Washtenaw Promise, and teachers and staff at Ford Early Learning Center in Ypsilanti, MI.
Rolling Up Our Sleeves: PBK Greater Detroit knows true community involvement is about more than providing financial support. As Phi Beta Kappa members, we value active participation in the world around us. We seek ways to engage in our community and make a difference. As opportunities arise, you can find them on our Events page.
